Fly to Indonesia Without Middle East Transit (Best Routes & Airlines)

With the world in a major time of unrest, a lot of travellers are understandably looking for ways to reach Indonesia without transiting through the Middle East.

There have been widespread flight cancellations, airspace closures, and considerable disruption. Major hubs like Dubai are still operating, but the situation is volatile, so many governments advise against travel to or through these areas.

The good news is that it’s completely possible to reach Indonesia via other routes – and actually quite easy once you know where to look.

Here’s our simple, practical guide to the best routes, airlines, and options.

Can You Fly to Indonesia Without Going Through the Middle East?

While transiting through places like Doha and Dubai is a common option for reaching Indonesia from Europe or the United States, you don’t always need to fly through the Middle East to get to this part of the world.

Instead, you can plan a route through other major hubs in Southeast or East Asia, which are well-connected, reliable, and commonly used for international travel.

Best Transit Hubs to Reach Indonesia (No Middle East Routes)

These are the easiest and most popular places to connect through:

  • Singapore – one of the best-connected airports in the world, very smooth for transfers, and only a one-hour flight from Medan in North Sumatra!
  • Kuala Lumpur – often cheaper, lots of flight options into Indonesia (and beyond). Also around a one-hour flight to Medan.
  • Bangkok – good availability from Europe and Australia
  • Hong Kong – strong international connections, especially from Europe
  • Taipei – great option for long-haul flights, especially from the US

From any of these locations, it’s easy to find onward flights to places like Jakarta, Bali or Medan.

Another route to consider is Turkish Airlines, via Istanbul. While this is a little closer to the Middle East, it uses different flight paths and can be a great transit link from many European cities directly to Jakarta or Bali.

Airlines That Don’t Fly Through the Middle East

If you want to avoid Middle East routes for now, focus your travel planning on Asian-based airlines such as:

  • Singapore Airlines / Scoot
  • Malaysia Airlines / AirAsia
  • Thai Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • EVA Air

These airlines usually transit through their home hubs, not the Middle East.

Example Flight Routes to Indonesia (Avoiding the Middle East)

Here are a few popular sample routes to get you here:

  • Europe → Singapore → Indonesia
  • UK → Kuala Lumpur → Indonesia
  • Australia → Bali (direct) or via Singapore
  • USA → Tokyo / Taipei → Indonesia

Remember, when you’re searching, you can often choose your layover city manually to control your route.

Which Routes to Avoid (If You Don’t Want Middle East Transit)

If your goal is to completely avoid the Middle East, you may want to skip routes that transit through:

  • Doha
  • Dubai
  • Abu Dhabi

These are major global hubs, but not essential for reaching Indonesia.

Tips for Booking Flights to Indonesia Right Now

Whenever we travel, we use Google Flights to plan our routes and find the best value flights.

Make sure you check the layover locations carefully when you’re planning yours.

  • Try “multi-city” search if you want more control
  • Look at the airline before booking — it usually tells you the route
  • Don’t just pick the cheapest option without checking the transit point

For most travelers, avoiding the Middle East just means choosing a slightly different route, not cancelling the trip entirely.

Once you know which hubs and airlines to look for, it becomes very straightforward.
