Travelling to Aceh
Welcome to Aceh (pronounced Ah-chay), Indonesia’s westernmost province.
The massive Leuser Ecosystem stretches upwards from North Sumatra into Aceh, creating some incredible off-the-beaten-path trekking spots, like beautiful Ketambe.
Just off the northern coast lies Pulau Weh (Weh Island) – a beautiful island ideal for diving, snorkelling, and just relaxing.
Or head to the more remote Pulau Banyak (Banyak Islands) to have gorgeous white-sand beaches all to yourself.
Take the overnight bus to the capital city of Banda Aceh, or fly into its airport to explore what else this underrated part of Sumatra has to offer.
Pulau Weh ( Sabang )
Explore tropical island paradise
Pulau Weh (also known sometimes as Sabang, after its main town) is a very special place in Indonesia. It’s home to a unique monument known simply as “Kilometer Nol” (Kilometre Zero), marking the northernmost point of the country.
But of course, there’s much more to the island than a single monument! Pulau Weh is the ideal beach getaway for Sumatra travellers. Surrounded by coral reefs and home to a stunning coral garden, this is the ideal place for divers and snorkelers.
Even better, it’s small enough to scooter around! Check out the volcanic activity on the island, visit the local waterfall, get to know the friendly locals and appreciate those beautiful beaches.
