Why Hire a Driver in Sumatra?
Even getting from one place to another in a single Sumatran province can take a full day. Want to go from the jungle to Lake Toba? You’re looking at a 6-7 hour trip – and that’s with zero stops!
And if you choose to travel by bus? You’d better have a lot of extra time and patience up your sleeve.
For many travellers, hiring a private Sumatra driver is the best option. It saves you time & stress and provides you with more comfort and freedom.
You can stop where and when you like to stretch your legs, sightsee along the way, and arrive at your next stop relatively fresh.
For families travelling with kids in particular, this is a no-brainer. The freedom and convenience of a trusted driver over unpredictable bus schedules and noisy, crowded, hot minibuses is a game-changer.
If you have a bit of time up your sleeve, even inter-provincial travel using a private car and driver in Sumatra (such as going from Medan to Padang) can be a better option than flights for groups & families.
Domestic flights aren’t especially cheap. For the price of 1 or 2 plane tickets, you can have an air-conditioned car and a reliable driver/travel guide to cruise you between cities for a day or two, taking in the sights and seeing more of the island on the way.
What is Included in the Price of a Sumatra Car Rental with Driver?
Most drivers will give you a round-number price that covers everything: their time, petrol, and tolls. Just in case, it’s a good idea to check with your driver that toll fees are included and there are no hidden extras.
If your trip includes any tourist stops, ask if parking and entry fees are included in the price or extra.
If you’re booking a driver for multi-day and overnight trips, ask them if the price includes their food and accommodation, or if you will need to cover this.
Sometimes, if the trip is particularly long, your driver may bring another driver along for the ride. This is a great practise so that they don’t become overtired and put you at risk.

Tipping Etiquette and Extras for Your Sumatran Private Driver
For longer trips that require meal stops, we always pay for our drivers’ food. It doesn’t cost much extra and is a nice gesture.
If you’re stopping to buy drinks and snacks, get something for your driver. These trips are usually long and tiring. Remember, your driver might have gotten up at the crack of dawn to drive several hours to pick you up, or be facing a long return trip after your drop-off. Shouting them a coffee or a pick-me-up snack is always appreciated.
Should you tip your Sumatra driver?
This is totally up to you. If you are really happy with the service provided by your driver – and you have the budget for it – a tip is a great idea.
IDR 50,000 would be considered a decent, small tip for a shorter trip; 100,000 is a good amount, but it depends on the length of your trip, how you felt about the service, and your budget.
Tipping is definitely not a requirement or expectation, but a nice, appreciated gesture if you’re able to.
Should You Hire a Car and Self-Drive in Sumatra?
The driving style in Sumatra is no joke. Unless you have experienced it yourself, you probably can’t quite anticipate the chaos.
Rules? They exist, but they’re not often followed. It’s every man or woman for themselves. Passing at full-speed on blind corners, driving on footpaths, and a general race to the finish line are all part of everyday life.
This can be a bit hair-raising if you’re not used to it when someone else is driving, and downright dangerous if you’re the driver.
We would recommend against driving yourself around Sumatra unless you’re very used to the chaos. The local drivers are very used to it, know how to anticipate it, and take great care to keep you safe.
Their inside knowledge of the roads and driving conditions is priceless.
Beyond the chaos, insurance for foreigners driving rental cars is a legal gray area. If you’re in a fender-bender, you will almost certainly be held 100% liable regardless of who was at fault. It’s just not worth the headache.
How to Find a Good Private Driver in Sumatra
You will find some driving services online on popular travel platforms, but these are usually seriously overpriced.
Instead, head to Sumatra-specific travel groups on Facebook and ask for recommendations. If you’re a solo female traveller, try to narrow it down to driver recommendations from other solo female travellers.
Just because someone was great for a couple or family doesn’t mean they will be equally suitable for a solo female traveller (we know this from personal experience)!
