Hey, we're Agung & Carly, the couple behind Exploring Sumatra
We live and breathe this incredible island and have spent years uncovering its hidden corners, unforgettable adventures, and warm-hearted communities.
Through our blog, YouTube channel, and social media, we share everything we’ve learned to help you explore Sumatra like a pro – and fall in love with it, just like we have.
Why We Do What We Do
"Sumatra is one of the most underrated places in the world – we’re here to change that."
When we started travelling Sumatra together, we quickly realised how hard it was to find up-to-date, trustworthy travel information. Back then, there was almost NOTHING on the internet about the island. We decided to change that.
Exploring Sumatra is our way of shining a light on this beautiful part of Indonesia – from the wild jungles and volcanoes to the stunning beaches, beautiful cultures, and the friendliest people EVER.
We want to make it easier (and way more fun!) for travellers to discover every part of Sumatra.
Our Story
When Karo meets Kiwi
Agung grew up in a small village near Gunung Leuser National Park, surrounded by jungle and wildlife. He worked as a guide.
Carly is a zookeeper and writer from New Zealand who first came to Sumatra in 2009 to work with rehabilitated orangutans.
Years later, our paths crossed. We discovered a shared love for nature, animals, and adventure – and decided to build a life together in North Sumatra.
Today, we live at Lake Toba and spend our days exploring, creating, and sharing everything we love about this island.
